Olhão
Description
Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the most important protected wetlands in Portugal designated as a “Ramsar” site and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. This Nature Reserve belongs to the Natura 2000 network and covers an area of 14,000 hectares protected by a complex web of sand and dune barriers, extending for 60 km along the coast and hosting on a regular basis more than 20,000 water birds, especially during the Winter season.
This is a crucial point for migratory birds from Northern Europe to Africa. More than 220 species of birds can be seen in a single day in different habitats, such as dunes, open water, salt marshes, salt pans, reed beds, lagoons and pine forests.
We travel through dune areas, lagoons and marshes. We can observe resident and migratory birds. The Grey Heron, Eurasian Spoonbill, White Stork, Great Crested Grebe and Curlew are a few examples.
